Matthew in the office

Matthew specialises in helping people approaching or in retirement, small business owners planning their next chapter, and those dealing with significant life changes. His approach removes jargon and focuses on helping clients understand their position and choices clearly.

His career began in financial services in 2012, starting as a financial administrator before progressing into paraplanning and qualifying as a financial adviser in 2017. He later became Chartered and a Fellow of the Personal Finance Society.

Matthew founded White Stone Financial Planning in 2022 to focus on deeper client relationships and work with people who truly benefit from thoughtful financial planning.

What type of advice do you most enjoy giving clients?

Helping people understand where they are financially, what choices matter, and how their money can realistically support the life they want to live.

What motivates you to keep improving as an adviser?

Knowing that financial decisions shape real lives, and that a better understanding, clearer thinking, and honest advice genuinely improve outcomes for people over time.

What moment confirmed this was the right career choice?

Advising my first client, organising complex pensions, and hearing the relief they felt once everything finally made sense.

When he’s not helping clients, Matthew spends most of his time with his wife, Gem, and their daughters, Olivia and Lucy, embracing family life and the chaos that comes with it.

He’s a lifelong Derby County supporter, enjoys cricket, country pubs, and new technology, and rarely misses an opportunity for a proper ale in the sunshine.

What does your ideal weekend away from work look like?

A sunny BBQ in the garden, family around, trying (and failing) to avoid being soaked by my daughter’s water gun.

Who would be your three dream dinner party guests overall?

Stephen Fry, Winston Churchill, and Christopher Nolan for their insight, storytelling, curiosity, and ideas.

If you could instantly master any skill, what would it be?

Switching off my brain completely – if overthinking were an Olympic sport, I’m sure I’d have won a few medals by now.

What was the first album you ever bought?

Hot Fuss by The Killers. It’s still a perfect album 22 years later.

What qualities draw you to new people?

I am drawn to people who have passion for what they do, understand the importance of honesty, and have something interesting to say.

What’s your favourite song to play in the car?

It has to be Lose Yourself by Eminem.

What goals are still on your bucket list?

I would love to travel around Australia, see Derby win the Champion’s League, and follow the England cricket team on a tour of the West Indies.

What things never fail to make your day better?

Good coffee in the morning and a great dinner in the evening, with hugs from my family in between.
